    I feel that major cross cutting issues that affect Malawians include poverty, food insecurity due to erratic and unreliable rainfall, land degradation and fragmentation, rapid population growth, gender based violence and nutritional disorders. Although these cross cutting issues are addressed in the national curricula, they are not tackled from the perspective of ESD. Mostly, the focus of teaching and learning is rote memory with the aim of passing national examinations. For example, land fragmentation has been largely a result of the cultural value attached land ownership through patrilineal and matrilineal family systems. Due to overpopulation a pieces of land is divided so many times among the growing family members. In the end, the land fails to produces enough to sustain the farmer throughout the year hence food insecurity occurs. In addition gender-based violence is a result of the cultural belief that men are superior than women. In some areas his culture has also affected land ownership in the sense that women who bear the heavy burden of food insecurity have no say over the land they work on. Very little has been done to address this culturally or sustainably. One way of addressing these issues is to work with the communities as suggested by Million Belay to redefine the cultural roles of men and women in modern times.
    Furthermore, the issues of culture and indigenous knowledge are not very pronounced in the national curricula. There is need to take advantage of the Malawi’s rich culture and indigenous knowledge so as to promote ESD particularly in Teacher Education. This will in turn foster relevant education that is responsive to local issues of concern. This is of paramount importance if we are to achieve the mission statement of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology which is “To provide quality education and training to the nation through the development of need-based curricula and application of science, technology and innovative techniques for sustainable socio-economic development”.

    Learning action 1 has helped to me to deepen my understanding of SD and ESD in TE. It has also helped me to view my work as a teacher educator from the perspective of achieving SD4, 4.7 which i wasn’t aware of. I never had a chance to go through this document. I never realized that SD goals had a direct link to TE till now

    Henceforth, I will make sure that my teaching is reflecting SD and ESD principles. I will also orient my students on the same.
    As a country we have much work to do especially on making our curriculum to make it more responsive to SD and ESD.
    I would advise my workmates to integrate issues SD and ESD in the work so that we can achieve what is stipulated in our institution’s vision and mission statements.

    The Vision and Mission statement for St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College:
    VISION

    To train primary school teachers with a passion for environmental issues affecting the nation through proper utilization of natural resources for socio-economic development..
    1.To what extent does it reflect your understanding of sustainable development?
    St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College mission reflect sustainable development in the sense that it aims to inculcate in its students a sense of responsibility towards the environment they live in by using it sustainably. this is one of the colleges mission statement out of four
    2.To what extent does it reflect the definition of sustainable development that reads “Sustainable Development is development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”? Do you think this is needed or not?
    Yes, it is highly needed and this mission statement has met the definition of sustainable development in the sense that it gives room for the development of lifelong skills that will enable our student teachers to become responsible citizens of the country as far as sustainable development is concerned. Equipped with ESD knowledge and skills our student teachers can employ themselves without waiting for the government employment and can start different projects, engaging in different issues for sustainable development in their own communities. This is also reflected in the teacher education philosophy.
    3.To what extent does your institution’s Vision and Mission statement reflect the objectives of ESD and the GAP?
    Our institution’s Vision and Mission statement have a clear learning objectives for transforming learning and foster lifelong learning to both student teachers and teacher educators.
    4. How would you reframe/restate your institution’s Vision and Mission statement to more substantively reflect SD and ESD (based on your understandings of these concepts and your context)?
    Since the mission of St Joseph’s TTC reflect the SD and ESD there is no need to reframe it. However the vison statement lacks a direct link to ESD and i would reframe it as follows:
    To become a centre of excellence in the training of lifelong learning female primary school teachers with emphasis on ICT, inclusive education, gender responsiveness, environmental protection and pedagogical competence.

    My understanding of sustainable development is that this is a way of improving one’s life through activities and processes that are relevant and helpful to humans and their immediate environment today, will remain so tomorrow and forever. My community and country is struggling with issues of deforestation, land and water pollution, democracy, human rights, gender-based violence, poverty and food insecurity. This is just a tip of the iceberg. These human activities will negatively impact future generations.
    This has motivated our community of practice to do a change project which can address food insecurity through water harvesting as well as deforestation through planting trees.
    My understanding of the definitions of ESD and SD will surely help us to have a change project which will really empower the COP sustainably.

    I am impressed with the project of Mary Mount on recycling waste. At St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College and the surrounding communities, we also have a problem with litter. As a tradition, every year the college invites an expert who teaches teacher trainees how to develop instructional resources using locally available resources. For sure, this can be adapted to involve staff, communities, and trainees in producing useful instructional materials while cleaning the environment at the same time. Our initial Change project was to introduce our community of practice to simple water harvest technologies so that they can grow crops all year round without depending on rainfall. This will ensure the availability of staple food at the family level and school children will no longer have to go to school on empty stomachs as is the current situation. However, we will discuss the viability of these projects as a group.

    A lesson that I have learned after going through the case studies and the news articles is that you can have an initial thought on a project, but implement a different one. We need to be flexible and open-minded in planning.
