I like the change project for Mary Mount Teacher’s college of Zimbabwe were they are cleaning the environment by recycling waste and making them useful as well as using land for gardening. Such activities have a two fold benefit in that, by practicing such change, learners will be able to earn income once they sell what they produce from gardens and what they make from the recycled materials. Other than it being an income generating and poverty reduction activity, it leaves the environment clean and free from dirty related diseases. It further helps with food security at household level.

I admire the change project for Mary Mount Teacher’s college of Zimbabwe where they are engaging in the making of the environment in the process of waste recycling and making them useful more especially the thin plastics that are causing much havoc to the vegetative cover which hinder the growth of plants better use of soil nutrients for plant growth as well as using land for gardening.

The practice will have many impact to the community.
Controlling soil by vegetative cover and benefit of fruits and vegetables. Which above all will be transferred to the student teachers, then to the learners then to all the communities where the student teachers and learners are coming from.

It will bring sustainable source of income changing the livelihood of their families for the better. This way will eradicate poverty.

        The project will
leave the environment well covered and with good healthy and good livelihood in their communities and better sustainable way of living in all angles of life.

I enjoyed the case study of waste management by the college students. Their change has relevance to a change project in my mind
My change project advocates for alleviation of toxic pollutants and later eradication of such nondegradable materials from our rubbish bin and from our environments

Am impressed with all the projects by the University of Namibia and Serowe College of Education. I have learnt something from the University of Namibia in the production of bins using waste and make use of them in the management of litter in their environments
secondly, I have learnt from Serowe College of Education to impart practical skills in student teachers that will foster effective teaching of ECE learners

The Case Studies were well thought out. I particularly liked the one that blended IK in learning science. IK has sustainable practices that need to be explained scientifically during lessons.

The Sustainability Starts with Teachers Change Project being developed in the Serowe College of Education in Botswana. The ability to create teaching and learning materials by teachers and learners implies that learning institutions can use local resources to ensure effective effective teaching. Further more it is the best way of ensuring sustainable use of the local environment for the benefit of the future.

      1. Zimbabwe Sustainability starts with teachers change project peer review meeting hosted in Harare in 2019.Their incorporation of indigenous knowledge in the higher institutional curriculum has captured my interest as this seems to be the bedrock of education. It’s best when learners study on things within their local environment where they are able to access information about them and can even see them, not only that but even understand better. It says to me that my ESD change project should be localized as to allow incorporation of indigenous knowledge.
      2. Change project being developed in the Serowe College of Education in Botswana.Imparting practical skills on early childhood teachers and learners, creation of learning resource materials. Very much interesting! I see learners who are going to be equipped with creative skills and enhanced in their thinking capabilities also problem solvers because normally, in most African schools, there is always shortage or unavailability of learning materials therefore if teachers and learners are equipped with these skills, much better.

The change project that impressed me the most is the one done by Zimbabwe teachers which incorporated indigenous knowledge in the teaching/learning of Science concepts to relate what is taught at school with what the learners are familiar with in their local environment.
This change Project makes learning the concepts enjoyable to the learners and enables them to care more about the environment than they have earlier done as the gap between home and school is bridged through the incorporation of the indigenous knowledge.

The project I enjoyed most was the Mwekera beekeepers because it was touching acquiring knowledge in the head, developing skills with the hands and within that project was an attempt to influence values and attitudes of the heart.
My thinking was influenced in that I realised that whatever we do at my faculty in an attempt to transform our curriculum documents, the prescribed course outlines approved by senate, it will be important to transact the transformation with the wider community meaning that we need to attach a component that not only fosters skills development but also one that supports the development of pro environmental values and attitudes. This speaks of inward transformation with an outward look that should culminate in networking with a wider set of people to realise sustainability.

In our project, we will be working on a document analysis project to determine the extent to which Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) practices have been integrated in the Curriculum practices at the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) Faculty of Education (FoE).
This particular project was chosen as a ground breaking project to lay a solid foundation on which other future projects will be established. the search for evidence of ESE integration in all subject areas will:
      (1) Enable the group to engage all lecturers in all disciplines
      (2) Create catalytic effect to accelerate ESE integration in line with the 2030 United Nations Global Agenda (UNGA) currently focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our main focus is on SDG 4 and targets 4.7 and 4c in association with all the others SDGs.
      (3) Help to create confidence among the participants as we attempt to find a solution to the problem of accumulated students answer scripts that are supposed to be destroyed after 5 years. As part of our work, the group will embark on a research exercise to determine the best way such huge yet confidential material could be turned into high quality bio fuel capable of serving the wider community of practice beyond the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) Faculty of Education (FoE). The people I will be working with are fellow lecturers at SANU FoE taking part in this course.

I am impressed with the project of Mary Mount of recycling waste. we are also have a problem of litter at our campus, and even surrounding communities. Plastics are everywhere. For sure, this has influenced me to go that direction as well. we will discuss as a group on the way forward.
A lesson that i have learnt after going through the case studies and the news articles is that, you can have an initial thought on a project, but implement a different one. we need to be open minded.

I have enjoyed the projects in general as they range from curriculum transformation to upcycling waste, and sustainable technology. I think they are all relevant and exciting. the one that is relevant for me is curriculum transformation since I am in teacher education. I feel that the other projects can be adopted by learners as they do enquiry-based learning through group projects of their own. This can be done in different subjects, each one fostering the transformed curriculum in its own space. Even the project on integrating indigenous knowledge systems can be applicable in enquiry based learning projects in the consumer sciences and agriculture subjects. so I believe that with a transformed curriculum, transformed teachers and transformed teaching methodologies and mindsets, a lot of small projects can mushroom in the institution eg. recycling projects, technology projects and projects applying IKS. I Think that the enquiry-based curriculum already caters for this move. the important part would be assessment of these projects, as it was raised in the videos. it would involve training of teachers in assessment of competencies as learners engage in these projects. there is also, need for consensus in grading them, which would entail designing of an assessment tool. In the sciences where we are currently assessing skills in the classroom during laboratory experiments, this should not be a difficult task as long as we know what we want to reward, say originality, relevance in solving everyday living problems, scientific concept application in the group projects. We hope that the pandemic will subside soon.

I am interested with the change project developed in Botswana Serowe College of Education. I feel it is really empowering learners by instilling skills, values and attitudes. It’s not a matter of thinking about your generation but the generation to come. The learners after acquiring the skills, values and attitudes they can stand on their own and take care of the environment. Don’t give me fish but teach me how to fish goes the saying

MaryMount Teachers College project change on waste clean up exercise and reusing it for production of toys has really touched me. It is a good initiative of managing litter in our institutions which at the end of the day can also address the challenge of inadequate teaching resources. I have learned that collective effort can assist to bring meaningful transformation.

This session was enlightening. The examples were great, I was particularly impressed with the Eco bins project; and also the creation of knowledge clusters with learners.
This shows that a change project simply begins with an idea, a sustainable idea that contributes to quality and relevant education.

      Good morning
I think I like all the ideas, both the practical and educational change projects. For my institution I think it will be more appropriate to start with a workshop to bring all the departments onboard on how they can incorporate ESD into their curriculum. The issue of contextualizing the concept is very important so that it is not only associated with specific subjects but open educators minds on how it can be incorporated into all subjects in schools. For my institution we can also have different coloured refuse bins to sort our waste for recycling purposes. I think as the course progresses more ideas will come up.

I like the change project in Agriculture on local seed Bank. By sharing local seeds with the communities, learners and the community will reduce the burden on depending on genetically modified seeds which in most cases are expensive,a sustainable way of sourcing seeds. These have influenced my ESD project in a way that it should respond to the needs of the society and also engage a good number of actors.

It’s a welcome development. Indeed, there is a need to have a change in environmental sustainability through a collaboration of composed educationists and other stakeholders.

Practical implementation of relevant programs and mind set change of the societies perception towards environmental sustainability would be part of the solution.

All the examples were great but I particularly enjoyed the one from Mary Mount Teachers college where they use recycled material to make bins. I think recycled material can also be used to grow vegetables and herbs. I also liked the cleaning campaigns from Serowe College, they are empowering the students by instilling skills on taking care of the environment which will be passed on to the next generation.

All the change projects were exciting and relevant to ESD.I am quite interested in curriculum transformation change project as it can go a long way. A transformed curriculum leads to changed mindset of teacher trainees, school learners, parents, the society and the entire nation.
The ESD change project which incorporated indigenous knowledge also influenced me that through curriculum innovation, localized and skill oriented projects can be produced.

I liked the sustainable development review meeting held in Harare because it showed examples of sustainable development goals like promoting quality education through enhancing life long learning and assessing day to day skills. Also, it has indicated the need to institutionalize different change projects that concur with 21st century sustainable development goals.

am impressed with all case studies as they did the good job. but as teacher educator am impressed much with the Botswana case studies of creating Teaching and Learning materials for Early Childhood Education.
they made me to think on how to improvise the low/no cost materials to create the best, interested and durable teaching learning materials to help our students to manipulate the materials while learning so as to enhance the ESD

Thank you very much for the very informative SST case studies. I liked case study number 1 the most. This a SST change project developed by Mary Mount Teachers College in Zimbabwe. The change project featues a clean up campaign, creation of toys from waste and organic gardening to use up space. Nowadays disposing of waste has become a global manace and a cause for concern. The introduction of disposable nappies and face masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19 has worsened the situation. This case study has inspired me a lot. Through the change project that I am planning to do I think I will help contribute towards solving the waste management issues affecting Eswatini.Through the change project waste management will be viewed as a resource and thereby scale down the demand for extraction of new resources. Extracting fewer materials and using existing resources would help avert some of the impacts created along the chain.

Water access has become a critical issue in this part of the world. Why is this commodity scarce and how can we make it available again, a curriculum that is community based engagement can be enhanced to see how the problem can be resolved using local methodologies. i.e bringing the local into being again, a curriculum that is community based. I am thinking pursuing this change project because it a cross-cutting project in relation to health, climate change, hunger and poverty. Colleagues in my department: Dr. onesto Ilomo, Dr. Elifeleti Azaliwa. Dr. Eliada Tiengo and Mr. Zablon Mgonja and community leaders will engage in tailoring this curriculum

I liked one of the case studies under the SST Project Peer Review Meeting which focused on utilisation of biosphere reserves and indigenous knowledge systems in science teaching and learning. The idea of using knowledge from our cultural practices and heritage is interesting, particularly when one comes to think about that there are many traditional practices (e.g., in agriculture (such as vermiculture)) that have been documented to be eco-friendly than some of the methods (e.g. the use of highly hazardous pesticides) that have been developed. This supports the idea that we do have a lot around us that can supplement the methods that are used in educating students to become the best, and ultimately to turn around our societies to be the best.

All the case studies were appealing to me in different ways, but the one on peer review workshop caught my attention the most. The review allowed the participants to make presentations on their projects, followed by critique from other peer participants. What impressed me most was that a wider spectrum of the review touched upon the complete elements of each of the change projects. Needs assessment was covered, design and implementation were covered, formative and summative evaluation were covered. The review allowed me to gain insight about the whole idea of transforming our education curricula to promote sustainable development goals through Change Projects. I now have an idea how I will design, develop, implement and evaluate the Change Project with my team.

I liked the case study by MaryMount Teachers College though I felt its a kind of project already at the end-pipe – a lot could be be done to limit or control the waste generation rate in the first place – hence I think it is a secondary kind of a project. Also this project is well aligned with the sustainable development goals, in that waste collected during the clean up campaigns is used to produce toys for use by children and it is at the sametime reducing the volumes of wastes for discharge into landfills while it ensure much of the land is available is used profitably. In addition, toys created from the waste play a critical role in ensuring balanced mind development in children – reduces stress. The waste used for agricultural purposes also promote production of vegetables, crops, cash for healthful families- poverty alleviation initiative.

This project influences my education change project in various ways.

I am impressed with the project of Mary Mount on recycling waste. At St. Joseph’s Teacher Training College and the surrounding communities, we also have a problem with litter. As a tradition, every year the college invites an expert who teaches teacher trainees how to develop instructional resources using locally available resources. For sure, this can be adapted to involve staff, communities, and trainees in producing useful instructional materials while cleaning the environment at the same time. Our initial Change project was to introduce our community of practice to simple water harvest technologies so that they can grow crops all year round without depending on rainfall. This will ensure the availability of staple food at the family level and school children will no longer have to go to school on empty stomachs as is the current situation. However, we will discuss the viability of these projects as a group.

A lesson that I have learned after going through the case studies and the news articles is that you can have an initial thought on a project, but implement a different one. We need to be flexible and open-minded in planning.

I enjoyed the case study of Mary Mount teachers of Zimbabwe. They were cleaning their sorrounding area to collect waste which they used in the garden. Thereafter they have good produce. There is the issue of recycling here. They didnt go and just dump the waste no but they used it as manue. Inturn they had good produce from the garden which they sold and have income to reduce poverty.

We should make use of the environment as much as possible

I have enjoyed all the case studies at different levels though. My attention has been drawn by the recycling practices that play a greater role in resource management, health and safety. Their projects are relevant to ours as they also focused on transforming their curriculum and imparting practical skills in preservice trachers that will foster effective teaching of ECE learners. As trainers of secondary school preservice teachers, our intent is to mainstream ESD in all departments (whole institutional approach) infusef with practical skills that will be assessed. Competency skills to be assessed will be critical thinking, problem solving, innovation and enterprebeurshio skills.

I liked the Mary Mount Teacher’s college of Zimbabwe change project where they are cleaning the environment by recycling waste. I like it because it makes the community to be actively involved in a sustainable project and teaches each one of them that they can make a change in their own environment as far as waste management is concerned. I also liked the peer reviewing of change projects because it establishes a network of participants that aim at bringing change in many different and innovative ways around their own neighborhood or country and can promote collaborations with institutions that do similar change projects.

I have enjoyed the news article from Zimbabwean change project story whereby dump materials were to be turned into useful audio visual aids for primary school Education in Masvingo.
These have influenced my thinking about my Education for Sustainable Development change project in the sense that the communities around our college have a lot of dump materials which are not properly disposed of. In turn this is contributing to accumulation of green house gases in the ozone layer which cause climate change. This is resulting in variations in rainfall patterns consequently hunger, poverty, low development and school drop outs just to mention a few.
This news article will help me to think critically on ways of helping in overcoming the outlined challenges so that the communities will be helped in the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to shape their actions/practices to improve the quality of their lives without compromising the future and the planet at large.

The change project I enjoyed was for Mary Mouth College where students did cleanup campaigns that help to beautify the college. While cleaning the environment, the waste was never destroyed or taken as useless but different forms of toys were created. Organic gardening to use up space was also done. This change project also accommodated all students even those with disabilities can participate without barriers and allows creativity among them. Social and mental development was acquired while doing this project among the students.
In addition, students can sell the toys and the vegetables they get from the waste whereby it can boost their financial income. The vegetables can also help in the school feeding scheme and eat a balanced meal. Good nutrition in schools increases the attendance of learners(no absentees) and boosts class concentration.
